Who Are the Lions?
Lions are people just like you and me. They are men and women who care about their community and the world around them. We are part of the International Association of Lions Clubs that was founded in 1917 and that is the largest service organization in the world. Since its founding in 1939, our Lions Club has distributed over a quarter of a million dollars back into both communities. In 2004, the Stow Lions Club merged with the Munroe Falls Lions Club to form the Stow Munroe Falls Lions Club.
It started as a small group of individuals who were passionate about community service. Over the years, it has grown into a thriving community club with a strong presence in Stow and Munroe Falls.
Our Lions organization is constantly looking for new adult members of all ages as well as high school age students, who want to participate in an organization that exits to serve the needs of the residents of Stow and Munroe Falls.
As a Lion there are several ways in which you can participate as part of the team. Our club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month. Meeting attendance is not mandatory but attending does afford each Lion the opportunity to get to know their fellow Lions and build camaraderie. Each meeting generally involves reports from the secretary and treasurer, discussions about current project planning, and any new club business. We are working to develop a viable remote meeting capability so that a Lion can attend a meeting remotely. The effort is made to have a guest speaker at one meeting each month.
Our club projects have Lions participating as officers, chair persons, project committee members, and providing Lions to assist with project related activities. Our fundraising projects need Lions to participate in pre-event activities such as contacting vendors about being a sponsor, supplying cash contributions, or providing gift card, coupons, and/or gifts for raffles. All our major fundraisers need Lions to help with pre-event setup and post-event takedown activities.
There is always the need for Lions to be direct participants with onsite, fundraising operation. Examples are assisting buyers during the annual flower sale, manning ticket windows during Race for Sight, and assisting with Paw Fest activities. There are other volunteer activities in which our Lions participate such as Stow Bull Dogs bag filling and maintaining garden areas at the Stow City Hall.
For several years the Stow-Munroe Falls Lions Club has sponsored three major fundraisers. Race for Sight is generally scheduled for early in March as an indoor function. The Flower Sale has been occurring on the Saturday before Mothers’ Day. It is conducted as an outdoor affair. Paw Fest is generally planned for the third Sunday in September and has always been conducted at the Bow Wow Beach area in Silver Springs Park in Stow.
Our Lions organization is open to new projects that will benefit either sight related needs or any other worthy, charitable cause that benefits Stow and/or Munroe Falls residents. While we hope that every Lion would wish to participate in every fundraiser, you can become a Lion for a specific fundraising effort. The key word here is “participation”.
